Borregaard in Sarpsborg, Norway
Borregaard was set up in Sarpsborg in 1889 to build a pulp and paper mill as a UK registered company
trading under the name of The Kellner Partington Paper Pulp Company Limited.

During the 1980's significant new investment was made in Borregaard ChemCell including the erection of a new pulp drying machine, new cutting, baling and reeling equipment and the conversion of the bleaching plant for eucalyptus kraft pulp from Brazil to sulphite pulp. At the same time, Borregaard ChemCell increased its sales volume from approximately 100,000 to 150,000 metric tonnes as a result of switching production from captive use in processes which were discontinued to external sales of market pulp. Borregaard ChemCell also invested in a new wood yard with large de-barking drum and a new chipper. In addition, the digester house, originally built in the early 1950's, was completely modernised with nine new stainless steel digesters and a new chemiwasher.

A result of this recent work is that the entire pulp line has been either built or refurbished during the last 20 years which makes this mill the most modern sulfite plant in the world.
